What is Recreation and Park Month?

Is an initiative through the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) to promote the benefits of a healthy and vibrant community such as Fort St. John!

We are embracing this opportunity as a way to promote local programs and events, parks and facilities that are available for all citizens to enjoy. 

Join us as we celebrate the return of summer with our Recreation and Park month initiative through the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA). Get involved in outdoor activities throughout the month and raise awareness for the role that parks and recreation play as a pathway to individual and community well-being.

ParticipACTION Community Challenge (All of June)

Join the ParticipACTION Community Challenge for all of June to stay active and connect with others. Utilize the ParticipACTION app to track your physical activity and contribute to our community’s quest to be crowned Canada’s Most Active Community. National Health and Fitness Day (June 1)

Fort St. John is joining hundreds of communities nationwide in celebrating National Health and Fitness Day! This initiative aims to promote health and wellness in our vibrant community. To mark the occasion, we will host a variety of partnered activities throughout the area to encourage everyone to get active! Check out the schedule below for events that are either FREE, BOGO, or available with a non-perishable food donation.

Court Sports (June 1, 2, 8, 9, & 16)

Two courts are available for badminton or Pickleball on Saturdays & Sundays this June from 10am – 1pm at the Pomeroy Sport Centre (last session June 16). Indoor shoes with good grip are required. Equipment is available to loan for free. No sessions on Saturday, June 15 for the annual Ball Hockey tournament. Check out our Dry Floor Schedule, regular drop-in fees apply.

Open Oval (June 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, 13, 15, & 16)

Take a leisurely ride on a bike, strider, scooter, skateboard or rollerblades on the Pomeroy Sport Centre Oval on Saturdays & Sundays from 10 am -1pm, and Thursdays from 4-7pm (last session June 16). This is the perfect environment for toddlers to learn to ride. Motorized equipment (such as e-bikes or hover boards) is not permitted. IMPORTANT: This session is for leisure riding only. Tricks on ramps, rails, etc. are not permitted. Helmets required for ages 8 and under. Check out our Dry Floor Schedule, regular drop-in fees apply.

Aqua Tots (June 2, 5, 9, & 12)

Join us at 10 am for Aqua Tots at the North Peace Leisure Pool. This 45-min postnatal fitness class that helps introduce babies into the water while parents get a chance to socialize with other parents and bring fitness back into their lives. This class is ideal for babies age 4 months to 2 years. These classes take place on June 2, 5, 9, and 12 starts at 10am, Regular drop-in admission applies.

Bouncing Beans (June 2, 9, & 16 <FREE for Father’s Day)

Bring your children (age 1-14 years) for an action-packed afternoon of play, socializing, and bouncing fun at the Kids Arena Fieldhouse from 1:30 – 3pm. Caregivers must supervise their children. Indoor shoes or socks are required. A pass is required for this program. Bring your pass with you to show it to our staff at the entrance. Purchase your pass at the Visitor Centre, North Peace Leisure Pool or online at forstjohn.ca/activenet. No pass required on June 16’s special Dady & Me Bouncing Beans. Everyone welcome FREE of charge.

NorthRiver Midstream FREE Swim (June 2, 9, 16, 23, & 30)

Come and enjoy a free swim every Sunday from 1-5pm thanks to our sponsor NorthRiver Midstream. Enjoy full access to both leisure and lap pools with access to waterslides, diving boards, sauna, and steam room. Waves and Tot Slide available upon request. No lap lanes available at this time.

Feather Fit (June 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 21, 24, 26, & 28)

This program is recommended for actively aging individuals (50+) that want to enhance their physical fitness. All fitness levels are welcome.  Classes are every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10:30am – 11:15am at the Pomeroy Sport Centre Studio. Cost: $9.00/class

GoByBike Week (June 3-9)

GoByBikeBC Week is underway and is happening June 3-9. Ride your bike to work, to school or for fun. Register online at www.gobybikebc.ca and log your bike trips for the chance to win awesome provincial prizes, including an E-bike! You can also win prizes this week by submitting your pictures to recreation@fortstjohn.ca or by posting pictures in the comments section. Happy biking!

Latin Zumba (June 3,10,17, & 24)

Join Instructor Jorge for Latin Zumba! This exciting class features a wide variety of dance styles and music. This class is on Mondays from 7-8pm and Fridays from 6:30-7:30pm. Regular Admission Applies.

Tumble Time (June 4, 6, 11, & 13)

Bring your children (age 1-5 years) to the Kids Arena Fieldhouse for some active play Tuesdays and Thursday in June (last day is June 20) from 10:30am – 12:45pm! Your children can explore tunnels, build with giant blocks, play with interactive toys, and bounce on the castles! Caregivers must supervise their children. Indoor shoes or socks are required. Youth Ball Hockey (June 5 & 12)

Youth ages 10-13 can enjoy drop-in Ball Hockey from 4-5:30 pm on Wednesdays on the West Rink of the Pomeroy Sport Centre (last session, June 12). A recreation staff member will be on site to help get games going! IMPORTANT: Clean, indoor runners with grip are required. Sticks brought from home must have tape removed. Limited sticks and goalie gear are available to borrow for no additional fees. All participants must sign in and pay at the front desk prior to play. Glow with Pride Swim and Skate (June 8)

On June 8, come and rollerblade on the oval at the Pomeroy Sport Centre from 4-7pm. We are happy to partner with North Peace Pride Society to provide a space to create awareness on the importance of diversity, acceptance and inclusion in all aspects of life. Regular admission applies.

Health and Fitness Expo (June 8)

As part of the kick off for North Peace Shop Local Program supported by the Northern Development Trust Initiative, we would like to bring attention to services offered in our region in the health and wellness sector through a one stop location for the public to get information on health and fitness services. Funds raised will be re-invested into the community through the North Peace Shop Local Program. There will be a tradeshow with a separate space for Workshops, Presentations, or Fitness classes. Check it out on Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 10:00am - 4:00pm at the Pomeroy Hotel & Conference Centre.

Spin & Stretch (June 8)

PRE-REGISTERATION REQUIRED THROUGH VIVE SPIN STUDIO. Non-perishable food donation required for yoga on the day of. All donated items will go to a local charity. Join Marissa for 40 minutes of heart-pumping spin class at 8:45, followed by a soothing 40-minute Yoga Fitness session featuring traditional poses. To join, you can use your regular VIVE Membership, VIVE Punch Pass, or pay a drop-in fee for spin. A non-perishable food donation is required for the stretch component. Yoga mats are provided, but feel free to bring your own if you prefer!

Intro to Pickleball Sessions (June 10 & 24)

Join the Peace Country Pickleball Association offering FREE sessions on June 10 and 24 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm on the Kin Park Pickleball Courts. Non-club members and all ages and skill levels welcome! These are drop-in activities, no registration is required. Participants are encouraged to bring their own paddle, ball, and protective eye-wear. Some loan equipment may be available as supplies last.

June StoryWalk® (June 10-16)

Get your little ones out to enjoy a leisurely walk while exploring charming pages of a storybook placed along the Fish Creek Community Forest trail from June 10-16.

Make Geocache Workshop (June 13)

Have you ever gone on a quest to discover the geocaches hidden by the Recreation Team in Fort St. John? If you’re curious about the art of crafting these hidden treasures, join our interactive workshop! This is an all ages workshop but children under 8 must be accompanied by a caregiver age 16+. This Workshop takes place on June 13 in the Pomeroy Sport Centre Meeting Room from 6-7:30 pm. $5 admission. Register online here: Make a Geocache Workshop.

Bright Nights in June at the North Peace Cultural Centre (June 15)

Bright Nights in June Art Festival is about celebrating and growing the arts community in Fort St. John. The Maker’s Market is on Saturday June 15 from 10 am – 3 pm. Visit www.npcc.bc.ca for more information.

Free Tai Chi Session (June 22)

Enjoy a FREE Tai Chi session with Willow Moon Internal Arts Tai Chi and Qi Gong! Gentle, slow, intentional movement practices to enhance your health, balance and wellbeing. Join Tammy on June 22 for Tai Chi class at the Pomeroy Sport Centre Studio from 1-2pm!

Dog Agility Training (June 24)

Join Kelsey for a FREE Dog Agility session on Monday June 24! It will take place at the medium sized dog park at Toboggan Hill from 6-7 pm. All dogs must be on a leash, friendly with other dogs, and under control at all times. Each dog and owner will have the chance to take their dog through an agility cycle.

Last Class Bash at the North Peace Leisure Pool (June 27)

Grab your friends and celebrate the last day of school from 6-10pm at North Peace Leisure Pool. Kick off summer with our Last Class Bash and enjoy snacks, prizes, games, inflatables and more. Regular admission applies, no registration required.
