Housing
Guided by the Official Community Plan, Council's Strategic Plan, and our Housing Strategy, the City of Fort St. John aims to create a sustainable community by encouraging various housing types and ensuring we meet the evolving housing needs of our residents.
The City's role in housing
The City of Fort St. John supports housing priorities through many actions within our regulatory scope. Although many factors that affect housing demand are mostly beyond local government control, the City supports the housing needs of our community through:
- Regulation: determining and defining the locations and types of housing that can be built
- Policies: encouraging development of affordable and non-market housing options
- Advocacy: to the provincial and federal government on various housing issues
Anticipated Housing Needs
5- and 20- Year Housing Needs
In response to new provincial regulations, municipalities are now required to conduct a comprehensive, multi-faceted assessment of housing needs. These assessments are integrated into the municipality's Official Community Plan, ensuring that housing policies and development strategies can effectively accommodate projected needs over the next 20 years.
