Fire Department responds to structure fire on 100 Avenue

At approximately 6:00 pm on February 6, the Fort St. John Fire Department responded to reports of black smoke coming from a second-floor window at a residence located above a commercial building at 8111 100 Avenue.

Crews arrived to find a working fire and initiated an aggressive fire attack, deploying hose lines to bring the fire under control. A total of five apparatus and 15 firefighters responded to the incident.

The fire was quickly knocked down and brought under control at approximately 6:15 PM. The occupant of the rental unit was not at home during fire suppression efforts. Firefighters stayed on scene to conduct overhaul operations and ensure complete extinguishment, checking for any remaining hot spots.

As a precaution during the fire suppression, utilities to the affected unit in the building were turned off by BC Hydro and PNG.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The RCMP has taken over the investigation, and any further inquiries regarding the cause of the fire should be directed to the Fort St. John RCMP. The Fort St. John Fire Department will continue to assist the RCMP as needed during this investigation.
