Fire Department responds to significant structure fire
December 8, 2024
At approximately 4:40 am on December 8, 2024, the Fort St. John Fire Department responded to a significant structure fire in the 8100 block of 100 Avenue. Seven apparatus and 16 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, where they encountered a working fire originating in the basement and extending into the attic of the building.
Fortunately, no occupants were present in the building at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported among firefighters or civilians.
Due to the intensity of the heat and the extent of fire spread, crews were unable to safely enter the structure. Firefighters established a defensive strategy, utilizing the department’s aerial apparatus and handlines positioned around the building to suppress the fire effectively.
The fire was brought under control around 6:30 am. Following containment, crews spent an additional six hours performing overhaul operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and to address potential hotspots.
As part of the suppression efforts, power to the surrounding area had to be temporarily shut down to maintain firefighter and public safety. The department worked closely with BC Hydro and other agencies to minimize the impact of the power outage on residents.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Fort St. John Fire Department thanks the community for their patience and understanding during this incident and extends its gratitude to BC Hydro and other supporting agencies for their assistance in ensuring the safety and efficiency of the response.
As the winter season continues, the department reminds residents of key fire safety tips:
- Ensure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are in working condition.
- Avoid overloading electrical outlets with holiday lights or space heaters.
- Have heating systems inspected and serviced annually.
- Keep flammable materials at least one meter away from heat sources.
- Develop and practice a home fire escape plan with all family members.
